Language can be a significant barrier to everything – finding a job, making new friends, and navigating your new community.

One free English language program is through Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC), offered by ISSofBC in Maple Ridge. LINC classes are a very good way to learn English and Canadian culture while getting to know your community. You can find out more about the program and whether you are eligible to participate here . LINC programs are usually in high demand, so if there is no availability, make sure to put your name on their waiting list. Then you can check out other free or low cost options like the Continuing Education Program or Golden Ears United Church courses.

The English Language Learners program (ELL) of School District 42 is available to children whose primary language is not English and who require assistance to become fluent. Presently nearly 800 children representing over 25 nationalities are receiving ELL instruction, further enriching the community of languages in Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows School District No. 42.
